Gilmen Northagen Obituary

Gilmen J. Northagen, age 89, resident of Lakota, ND, formerly of rural Dahlen, ND, died Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota.

Gilmen John Northagen was born May 10, 1928 on the family farm near Dahlen, the son of Henry J. and Joran (Steinley) Northagen.  He was raised on the farm, attended the Dahlen School, and was confirmed at East Sarnia Lutheran Church.   Gilmen moved to South Dakota to work in the gold mines, then returned to ND and drove gravel truck for family.  He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and was stationed at Ft. McArthur, CA.  He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a Corporal in the Military Police.  After the service he returned to ND and married Kathleen Lindly on November 2, 1955.  In 1956 they moved to Butte, MT and he worked in the mines.  In March of 1957 they moved back to ND to take over the family farm and raise their family.  Gilmen retired in 1994.  The couple moved to Lakota in October of 2017.  He was a member of the American Legion for 62 years.  He served as a Director on the boards of Dahlen Township, the Dahlen Elevator, and Fire Department.  He won the Nelson County Conservation Award in 1971.  He also loved the outdoors, especially trapping and hunting.

Gilmen will be deeply missed by his wife of 62 years, Kathleen of Lakota, ND; son, John (Lynette) Northagen of Thompson, ND; 2 daughters, Pam (Doug) Hove of Park River, ND and Julie (Terry) Tennison of Fordville, ND; 8 grandchildren, Alissa, Erin, Kimberly, Lisa, Amie, Jessica, Cole, and Jayden; 2 great grandsons, Dylan and Jarrett; 2 brothers, Jim (Doris) Northagen of Beaver Bay, MN and Lloyd Northagen of Walhalla, ND; brother-in-law, Harlan Charon of Bemidji, MN; sister-in-law, Lorraine Northagen of Pequot Lakes, MN; and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Olaf; sisters, Avis Dvorak and Violet Charon; brother-in-law, Donald Dvorak; and sister-in-law, Doreen Northagen.

The Funeral Service for Gilmen will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota, ND, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.  Interment will be in the spring at East Sarnia Cemetery, rural Whitman, ND.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue on Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Michigan Ambulance Service or the Dahlen Fire Department.
