Hubert M. Spanier

Hubert “Hubie” Spanier, age 83, resident of Lakota, ND, died Saturday February 16, 2019 at his home in Lakota with his beloved puppy Jazmin by his side.

Hubert M. Spanier was born September 12, 1935 in Lake Henry Township, MN to John and Helena (Meyer) Spanier.  Hubert married Sharon A. Mathison in 1972 and together they raised three children.  Later he found love again and shared nearly 30 years with his special friend, Margie Zahn.

A life long dairy farmer, he began his career on the farm he was born and retired the first time at age 70 from Sharp’s Dairy in Aberdeen, SD, where he had been the head herdsman for almost 30 years.  Finding too much time on his hands in retirement he ventured across the street to Northern State University, where he worked part time at the Barnett Sports Center.  His favorite part of the job was visiting with all the coaches about the sports they coached.

Some of Hubert’s favorite things to do were to share a joke, sing a song, or shake for a drink.  Much of his free time was spent following his favorite sports teams, mainly, the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins.

Hubert is survived by his three children, Angela (Nathan) Jutila of Lakota, ND, Aaron (Azure) Spanier of Fort Worth, TX, and Alan (Kelly) Spanier of Jamestown, ND; nine grandchildren, Tyler, Kristen, Ella, Addie, Maddie, Taylor, Emma, Ashlyn, and Jack; as well as two sisters, Carol (Mark) Zaczhowski of Pine River, MN and Rosetta Olmscheid of San Diego, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helena; his former wife, Sharon Spanier; his special friend, Margie Zahn; three brothers, Joe Spanier, John Spanier, and Adelbert Spanier; four sisters, Marie Olmscheid, Julietta Fuchs, Dorothy Olmscheid, and Odilia (Motsie) Hagen; and one granddaughter, Hope Ann Jutila.

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church of Lakota, ND, on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m.  Visitation will be held at the Church on Friday, March 1, 2019 beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil & Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be at a later date in St. Margaret’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Lake Henry, MN.
