Richard "Dick" Hamel

Richard “Dick” Hamel, age 66, resident of Lakota, ND, died Monday, December 17, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.

Richard Louis Hamel was born April 22, 1952 at Minot, ND, the son of Louis and Theresa (Stroh) Hamel.  As an infant, his family moved to Lakota.  Dick was raised on the family farm and attended Lakota High School, graduating with the class of 1970.  He then attended the University of North Dakota until 1974, when he returned home to farm with his father.  Dick farmed his entire life in the Lakota area, eventually taking over operation of the family farmstead.  He loved spending time hunting, fishing, and was a fan of auto racing.  Dick was involved with many youth and hunting activities, which also included instructing hunter safety courses.  He had served many years on the Lakota School Board and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Dick will be greatly missed by his 3 children, Teri (Billy) Thompson of Park River, ND, Andi (A.J.) Wohlers of Lakota, and Ricky (Katie) Hamel of Lakota; 6 grandchildren, Blair, Lennyx, Rikki, Kelsey, Finnegan, and Simon; his parents, Louis & Theresa Hamel of Lakota; 2 sisters, Connie (Dennis) Reiss of Arlington, WA and Traci (Bruce) Maragos of Bismarck, ND; 1 brother, Jim (Suzanne) Hamel of Fargo, ND; several nieces & nephews; and many special friends, including Jim & Jeanne Aaker and Mike & Cindy Ritteman.

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lakota, ND, on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the Church on Wednesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil & Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the Church on Thursday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
