Lou Sampson Obituary

Lou Sampson, age 81, resident of Edmore, ND, died Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND.  Elanda Lou Howes was born October 3, 1939 in Lawton Township near Edmore, ND, the daughter of Russell and Alma (Fossum) Howes.  She grew up on a farm in Prospect Township where she attended grade school.  She graduated valedictorian of her class from Edmore High School in 1957.  Lou worked for Northwestern Bell in Minneapolis, MN, from November 1957 to September 1960.  She moved back to Edmore and worked as secretary of the Edmore Farmers Union Oil Company from September 1960 through December 1971.  She worked for the Johnson Store in Edmore from March 1994 to July 2002.

Lou married Clark Owen Sampson on October 24, 1970 at United Methodist Church in Edmore.  They resided in Edmore until May 1974, when they moved to the farm south of Edmore where Clark’s parents had lived.  Lou became a resident of Eventide Heartland Care Center in August of 2002.

Lou enjoyed many activities and hobbies throughout her life.  She was a member of the Edmore Curling Club.  She liked to bowl and play bunco.  She was a member of the Edmore United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid.  She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing.  She was a collector, whether it would be of stamps, coins, newspaper clippings; she saved most everything.  She loved traveling, gardening, cooking, canning, watching gameshows, playing video games, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and reading.  She was a lover of music and had a large collection of records.  If music was playing, you would often find her singing and dancing.  Lou was very enthusiastic about playing Bingo.  She enjoyed many Bingo outings with her dearest friends.

Lou’s most cherished role was as a wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, of which she had many.  Lou loved hosting family gatherings and picnics with Clark, which were always filled with great fun, good food, laughter and games.  Lou was very friendly, outgoing and had a great sense of humor.

Lou will be deeply missed by her husband, Clark of Edmore; 4 children, Owen (Valerie) Sampson of Edmore, Christine Bushy of Moorhead, MN, Ned Sampson of Edmore, and Ellen Sampson of Rochester, MN; 2 brothers, LeRoy (Betty) Howes of Edmore and Dennis (Kathie) Howes of Arnegard, ND; sister, Marlene Howes Craik (friend Michael Christen) of Detroit Lakes, MN; and 3 grandchildren, Lauren Sampson, Ethan Sampson, and Jordyn Bushy.

Lou was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Duane Howes.

The family would like to thank Eventide Heartland Care Center and staff, Lou’s 2nd home and family, for the excellent care they gave her for 18 years and the warmth and consideration they showed the family.

The funeral service for Lou will be private, with burial in the Edmore Cemetery.
