Merton Kermit Ueland was born in his parent’s home by the Sheyenne River in Riverside Township in Steele County, ND September 3, 1925. He was the only son of Knute and Inga Loge Ueland and had an older sister, Shirley. He grew up and attended grade school in Riverside Township and four years of high school in Cooperstown.
Kermit enlisted in the service in April 1946 and served in the Army Air Corps. He did his basic training at Buckley Field Colorado. He did additional training at Scott Field Illinois. He completed the remainder of his service in Korea.
After his military service, Kermit started farming. He married Lois Johnson December 25, 1950. They had four children. They had a good married life and lived on the farm together for 49 years. Kermit was very involved in the community and served on local and state rural water boards, church and camp boards. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, American Legion and VFW. Lois passed away in July of 1999, and Kermit lived by himself at their home.
Kermit married MaryLou Johnson in June of 2004 and lived on MaryLou’s farm until 2018. Kermit enjoyed several years driving tractor for Marty on the farm. Kermit and MaryLou enter the Sheyenne Valley Care Center in October 2018 and stayed there together until his death.
Preceded in death by his parents Knute and Inga Loge Ueland and his sister Shirley Ueland Erickson, his first wife Lois Johnson Ueland and his son Keith Ueland. He is survived by his wife MaryLou Ueland, daughter Rhoda Gann (Roger), sons Martin Ueland (Rhoda) and Joel Ueland (Kim), grandchildren Codi Gann, Elizabeth Hogberg, Emily Fieker, Andrea Gann, Nathan Ueland, Molly Ueland, Martin Ueland, and Narve Ueland, and three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Kermit will be held Wednesday, April 7th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Saron Evangelical Free Church, rural Cooperstown. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the church. Officiating the service will be Pastor Kenneth Curtis and Pastor Steve King. Interment will be in the Saron Evangelical Free Church Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Cooperstown Bible Camp.
